The Wisconsin State Senate just UNANIMOUSLY voted to support my bill to fund a new Type 1 Juvenile Correctional Facility in Milwaukee County. This is the crucial next step Wisconsin needs to take to close the troubled Lincoln Hills juvenile school, which is in my district.

On this Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, we give thanks to those who selflessly put their lives on the line every day for our communities. Not all heroes wear capes, most wear badges. https://t.co/5K9eWqNVp9
While many Wisconsinites are familiar with the criminal probe and lawsuits that led to the Legislature mandating the closure of Lincoln Hills in 2017, we have not seen similar coverage of the current difficulties facing Lincoln Hills.
The pandemic has only exacerbated the difficulties there, with programming pauses and staff turnover contributing to an explosion of violent activity in 2020. In the last 6 months of 2020: Staff injury up 4700% ⬆️ Youth/staff battery up 117% ⬆️ Sexual misconduct up 75% ⬆️

While the eyes of Wisconsin politicians and the media are turned elsewhere, the staff at Lincoln Hills, my constituents, are left to work in a dangerous environment. https://t.co/C4OFs46dip.
I get texts from nurses on staff, scared to walk down the corridors alone. I get calls from wives worried their husbands won’t come home from work. I go to the store and see officers recovering from their injuries, broken eye sockets, and shoulder injuries that need surgery.
The Lincoln Hills of today is not safe. It’s an environment Corrections Secretary Carr acknowledges is a traumatic workplace. Staff cannot continue in these conditions. And they certainly can’t help the children in their care in these conditions. Lincoln Hills must close.
