Tyre Nichols cried out for his mom. How could that not humanize him in the eyes and hearts of the men beating him--men who had taken an oath to protect and serve. I can't comprehend this despite having seen similarly heartbreaking videos far too many times. I weep for my country.

On this day in 1965, John Lewis led over 600 marchers across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, and faced brutal attacks by state troopers. The violence shocked the nation and galvanized the fight against racial injustice. The Voting Rights Act was proposed 8 days later. https://t.co/C1M6depIrG

Reading to 1st graders at Silver Spring Elementary School in East Providence was a great way to spend a Monday morning. In an informal caucus, dogs easily defeated cats as the pet of choice. We read a great book- Equality's Call: The Story of Voting Rights in America. https://t.co/EAtI3gHbvB

The most important action to be taken on a day that so many in Congress are rightfully marking the horrific events of last Jan 6 is to immediately pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and The Freedom to Vote Act.

Lincoln's words serve as proper New Year's message. Happy New Year! "Let us neither express, nor cherish, any harsh feelings towards any citizens, who by his vote has differed with us. Let us at all times remember that all American citizens are brothers of a common country." https://t.co/seLB23a6ao
