Wait - the NBC reporter just said Tyson shut down its Waterloo plant "because too many employees were staying home." That's not quite how Tyson spun it right?
Under HF2355 as amended, Iowa employees can be fired "for cause" - ie, they won't be eligible for unemployment benefits - if they are convicted of public intox while on vacation and are required to spend the night in jail to dry out.

HSB281 does NOT prohibit employers from firing employees who refuses to comply with vaccine mandates. It does allow employees fired for this reason to receive unemployment benefits which is good but it does NOT ensure that folks who won't get vaccinated don't get fired.

No requirement that the conviction causes them to miss work or impacts their ability to do their job - an employer can even wait weeks/months until a seasonal layoff and then use the old conviction to successfully prevent the employee from getting unemployment benefits.
