Were standing strong on minimum wage. Today, the Senate Finance Committee advanced my bill, SB 7, which raises the minimum wage to $15 by 2025, indexes it to inflation, and ends the exemption that lets employers pay people with disabilities lower wages.
Tonight, the Senate voted to raise the minimum wage to $15 over the next several years, with provisions to reflect different regions cost of living. Its about time we gave Virginians a raise.
The beginning of the year means new legislation is in effect. Thanks to our hard work in 2020, the minimum wage is now at $12 per hour. Also starting today, sales tax has been reduced on certain groceries. Read about other laws taking effect today here: https://t.co/8EdL4HzzX8
Today, the Senate unanimously supported my bill, SB906, to expand the requirement for worker's compensation for firefighters diagnosed with certain cancers. It is our responsibility to care for those who have sacrificed their health for our safety. https://t.co/3SF2re7WGC
Yesterday, I met with the Virginia Professional Fire Fighters who thanked me for my bill, SB562, that extends the time period for filing a worker's compensation claim for certain cancers. Today, I'm pleased to report that bill passed the House of Delegates unanimously! https://t.co/h8glurw0h7
The G.A. has taken action to give low-income Virginians a raise. Our bill increases the minimum wage to $12 by 2023, then to $15 over the next few years if legislators re-approve it. If not, the wage will be indexed to CPI and increase with the cost of living each year.
