Governor Whitmer is issuing an order suspending the MI Unemployment Insurance Agencys ( UIA ) obligation to determine non-monetary issues before the UIA releases unemployment compensation benefits to needy unemployed workers. This order will relieve many desperate workers.

If workers essential to our critical infrastructure - truckers, grocery store stockers, plumbers, auto mechanics - show up to workplaces, and put their lives in danger, then the State of MI by emergency order should expand these workers protections under MIs work comp laws.

Im pleased I had the chance today to join @seiuhcmi @SEIULocal1 @Detroit_15 and @SEIU517M on a press call. As lawmakers, its about putting workers first and at the center of every solution so we can create real change. We need to be protect workers during and after this thing.

Gov. Whitmer, our legislative leaders, and I will work to make permanent the temporary extension of unemployment compensation benefits from 20 weeks to 26 weeks, the same number of weeks all the states around us already allow.

Ive been hearing phrases like claim volumes have climbed exponentially . The cited increases arent exponential. But the number of MI weekly unemployment applications pre-pandemic was an average of 5000. Last week 129,000 claimants made applications. So its almost exponential.

I had a lot of great conversations this morning with these representatives of the auto manufacturing industry, about issues as varied as talent recruitment during the time of quarantine to funding of the MI Going Pro Talent Fund. https://t.co/EYbFVNVrnZ

Many unemployment claimants waiting for benefits have 2 or more employments in their insurance base period, slowing down the process. This next Saturday, 4.25.20, the MI UIA should receive first quarter 2020 wage records, clearing the way for payment to many UCB claimants.
