#BREAKING in @MorningTech: New poll by @DataProgress shows bipartisan majority of Americans support taxing profits tech companies make off our personal data. Passing my bill w/@ericadamsfornyc would make NY first in the nation to ensure ppl get paid for the value of their data. https://t.co/L8xLJRAX0J

This is a good first step, but ad revenue is just one way companies use our personal data for massive profit. We should be looking at the broader commoditizing of data to truly capture the full spectrum of how our personal data makes $$$ for business. https://t.co/JafhEDw8KE

“Data is here and is being used and commoditized and commercialized in ways that we as laypeople don’t fully understand, Gounardes says. This law is trying to fix that problem.” Read more on the Data Labor Compensation & Accountability Act by @RuthReader https://t.co/GyQ4dvtRCo

According to a study by Oxford Univ, the data economy accounts for 7% of GDP and growing. In NY, w/ a GDP of $2.3T, that’s $100s of billions of economic value created by our data. We need to be fairly compensated for the value we create for others. https://t.co/lcTLTorbEb

Data disclosures are nice, but like fast food calorie counts, they don’t mean much. The commercialization of our data is worth trillions - profits we don’t see any return on. That’s why we need a data tax to compensate us for the value our data create. https://t.co/S78YuW5Cos

Our proposal is simple: companies using our data for profit & relying on individuals to create data for their own use need to pay their fair share for the profits they make off of us. A 2% tax on revenues generated in NYS could raise billions in revenue & stop data exploitation.

This ferocious growth comes largely from the commercialization of personal data. Runaway profits made off the data of individuals without any compensation or accountability? That’s why @ericadamsfornyc & I proposed the Data Economy Labor Compensation & Accountability Act. https://t.co/G5l5T8CRa1
