These workers may not have been anyone’s “first,” but they fought through the sacrifices to their health, safety and liberty that our racist systems forced on them. They built strong families like my own, and even stronger legacies, without expectation of recognition.
Who processed and hauled tobacco leaf by leaf, tended to homes they could never afford, laid the brick and mortar for businesses they couldn’t patronize, raised other people’s children, suffered appalling working conditions, and even worse living conditions.
