It is important to note, however, that I and many other members of the House devoted our weekend toward honoring an Alabama native and civil rights icon who dedicated his life to securing freedom, liberty ,and equality for all Americans.

Everyone must step up and help. We must be willing to listen to each other, have a moral compass, and make the sacrifices needed. A good starting point would be the golden rule, "love thy neighbor as thy self."
The challenges America is facing are bigger than racism. The real challenge moving forward is whether we can respect each other as human beings regardless of the color of our skin. We learn from our history and we should not repeat it. We are a nation of freedoms and laws.
As I stood in prayer and gave thanks for his service, my spirit was in mourning because our nation has lost a Civil Rights Hero.
